Restoring a Damaged Drainage Line Beneath a Retaining Wall
A damaged drainage pipe under a 60-foot retaining wall along southbound SR-55, near Hoag Hospital, was putting the wall and the roadway at risk. Flo Engineering removed about 10 feet of damaged pipe and installed new 18-inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), securing the connection with a concrete collar. Crews then restored the drainage inlet lid and backfilled with slurry to stabilize the base of the retaining wall. All work was completed under active traffic control. This was Flo Engineering's first emergency project directly supporting a hospital.

Highlights
FLO removed the damaged pipe and replaced it with new 18" RCP piping and a concrete collar, resolving the drainage failure without disturbing the retaining wall's structural integrity.
The team also restored the drainage inlet and sidewalk, and backfilled a void at the top of the retaining wall to complete the repair — all while maintaining traffic control on an active freeway.
